A Probabilistic Look at VIT’s placements

The Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) is renowned for its rigorous academics and stellar placement record. However, for the 10,000 students enrolled each year, the placement process can feel like a game of chance, with a significant element of randomness involved. This is where probability theory comes to the rescue, offering a framework to understand and analyze this seemingly chaotic process.

Randomness and the Law of Large Numbers

With a large student population like VIT’s, the placement process can be viewed as a series of independent Bernoulli trials, where each student’s job offer is a binary outcome: placed or not placed. Let p denote the probability of a student receiving a job offer. The Law of Large Numbers states that, as the number of trials (n) increases, the observed proportion of successful outcomes (x) will converge towards the expected probability of success (p):

This assures us that even though individual placements may seem random, the overall placement rate for the batch will tend towards a stable value (p) over time.

The expected value of this distribution represents the average number of students who are likely to receive job offers:

E[X] = Σ(p_i * n_i) where n_i is the number of students with probability p_i. This provides a valuable metric for assessing the overall placement performance.

Conditional Probability and Bayes’ Theorem

The placement process often involves factors that introduce conditional probabilities. For instance, a student with exceptional coding skills (C) will have a higher conditional probability of being placed in a software company (S) compared to others:

Bayes’ Theorem allows us to update our understanding of an individual’s placement prospects based on new information or changing circumstances. For instance, if we know that a student has secured an internship at a prestigious company (I), this information can be used to update the probability of receiving a job offer in that company:
